Multinational Exchange

This is Sone from Wiz Global.

Once again, I would like to spotlight students who have graduated from Wiz Academy.We have a student currently working at a family-run, homey ryokan (traditional Japanese inn) in Atami, Shizuoka Prefecture. Despite their different nationalities—one from Nepal and the other from Myanmar—both have become very close since starting their jobs at the ryokan. They have each been working there for about a year and a half and one year, respectively. The student from Myanmar studied Japanese in their home country before coming to Japan to work directly.



They have seamlessly adapted to the ryokan and even appear quite at ease. Over the past two years, the COVID-19 situation has led to an increase in the number of foreign nationals coming to work directly from their home countries. Given the accelerating labor shortage in Japan, this trend is likely to continue. Therefore, this time, we conducted a brief interview with the individuals involved and the staff who welcomed them to understand how they quickly adjusted to life in Japan and how they became accustomed to working and living in a new country.



They made efforts to ensure the new staff members didn't feel lonely by arranging opportunities for them to have meals with the welcoming company's staff, participate in local Japanese language classes, and interact with other foreign staff working at nearby ryokans. Additionally, they organized events where the new staff could try dishes from their own countries together. On the students' side, they made sure to connect with other foreign staff working at the same ryokan and engage with other foreign nationals in the area to make friends and alleviate feelings of loneliness.



Foreign nationals coming to work in Japan may experience stress when interacting with Japanese people outside of work, especially if they are still learning the language and find it challenging to keep up with native speakers (although those who are highly proficient in Japanese might not face this issue). Having colleagues in the same environment who share similar backgrounds can provide a sense of security and motivation. Many ryokans also recruit through Wiz Global, and improving the retention rate of foreign staff and ensuring they don't feel lonely are key goals. By sharing information and enhancing follow-up support, we aim to improve satisfaction and contribute to better recruitment outcomes for everyone. We strive to enhance satisfaction starting from the smallest details.
